Whats Up With Matthew McConaugheys Bushy Beard Look?

When we first saw this picture of Matthew McConaughey, we had to tilt our heads to the left. Then the right. Only after another 90-degree tilt to the left did we feel assured it was really him (apparently, the look's for a role in his upcoming film The Free State of Jones...but still).
The 45-year-old actor stepped out for the 2015 AFI Awards Luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills looking, well, a mite hairier than we're used to seeing him. The bushy situation was all the more noticeable because the actor's robust beard stood in unkempt contrast to his more under control coif. (We wonder what wife Camila Alves thought of the suave leading man-meets-lumberjack look—although she's been experimenting with her own hair, too.)
