Recent Car Flips in Colorado Springs: Investigating Causes and Trends

A report from the Colorado Springs Police Department states that there was a crash between two vehicles. This happened around 1:45 PM on Tuesday afternoon. At the intersection of Woodman Road and Commerce Center Drive, a driver hit a police vehicle from behind. The first vehicle then flipped over multiple times, and the driver was thrown out. Both drivers were taken to hospitals. The investigation is ongoing, and it seems that being under the influence of something did not cause the crash.
A Summer of Flipping Cars
The city has had a series of car flips recently. In July, there was an accident where a Bustang bus allegedly ran a red light at Kiowa Street and Cascade Avenue. The bus hit an SUV, making it turn upside down. The SUV driver got out and was treated at the scene before going to the hospital for minor injuries.
In June, there was a car flip on I-25, north of the Bijou exit. Multiple people were stuck in the vehicle and had to be helped out. Another flip happened on the interstate in July, just south of the Bijou exit. The driver in this single-car crash got seriously hurt, and debris from the crash hit a car on the other side of the road.
Reasons for Flipping
According to insurance company Progressive, there are several reasons why cars flip, with “tripping” being one of the main ones. When a car’s tires hit something like a median or a ditch, the car can tilt and flip over.
Other reasons for flips include driving too fast, especially around corners where the road’s grip is weaker, or if there’s a strong collision causing the car to tip over. SUVs, trucks, and vans are more likely to flip because they’re taller, but any car can flip under the right (or wrong) conditions.
Tough Time for Police Cars
According to the police report, this crash wasn’t the only one involving a police car lately. On August 10, a distracted driver hit a marked patrol car on South Academy Boulevard, near Airport Road. There were no injuries, but the patrol car was damaged and had to be checked before it could be used again.
