Autumn French nails are our favourite seasonal twist on a classic

Of course French nails have always been a classic, but with micro Frenchies and the American mani, they've been given a modern spin.

Autumn French nails takes the same theme and runs with it, only in delicious, rich seasonal shades of deep merlot, forest green, cappuccino brown, obsidian black, and midnight blue, in place of the traditional white tip. In our autumn nail trend report top manicurists, Julia Diogo (who paints the nails of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) Harriet Westmoreland (who also counts Rosie and Zendaya as clients) both named the autumn Frenchie as one of this season's biggest trends.

“Dark French tips on a sheer natural base, like a black tip, are big,” confirmed Harriet. “So a deep french in colours like Lady in Black and Malaga Wine by OPI. They're delicate with a bit of an edge,” she explained.  Plus, they “nod to the grunge trend,” that's blowing up on social media, she added. "Everyone will be asking for deep coloured Frenchies," agreed luxury Julia. "Try rouge noir, black, brow or deep forest greens.”

Within the trend, though there's still plenty of room for experimentation in terms of the shape and the design. “I think the ‘cool girl’ shape will be a long almond," says Harriet. It's been made popular by the likes of Hailey Bieber and Rihanna. If you prefer a shorter, squoval shape, Julia says micro Frenchies are the way forward.

And while some of the simplest designs are the best, especially executed with the crisp precision of a nail pro, we've also seen autumn French nails remixed with tortoiseshell prints, doubled and tripled-up half moons and ultra-fine lines vs jumbo tips to create something that works whether you're a minimalist, a maximalist or somewhere in between.
